Grade 1 initiative - Feed-a-Friend!

The Feed-a-Friend Program is the brain-child of Mrs Karen Du Plessis. It started gaining momentum early last term when she learned that children in Norwood Primary were going to school with no food in their stomachs and without food at break-time! One of our Mum’s, Mrs Mabel Chasumba (who is a teacher at Norwood Primary School), and Mrs Du Plessis have co-ordinated their efforts and energy to help these children. These two ladies who are very obviously extremely passionate about children and dedicated to education!

Having started on the Wednesday in the second week of Term 3, KEPS Grade 1 boys have been asked to participate in the Feed-a- Friend Program. Every Wednesday, the boys are asked to bring two identical lunch packs, one for themselves, and the other for a child at Norwood Primary. The learners, Mrs Chasumba and the Headmistress of Norwood Primary, have been blown away by the generosity shown by the KEPS boys and are extremely grateful as this project has already had an impact on the children.

The objective of this initiative is twofold : let your child learn the joy of giving unselfishly and committing to a long term project, thereby taking responsibility, and furthermore, have him eat the same lunch on Wednesdays as his Feed-A-Friend friend. This is so he will learn an appreciation for good solid nutritional food and realise how blessed he is to have so much!

The Grade Ones are committed to this project for the rest of this year and with the many willing and able parents, we are certain it is a project that will be sustained, and even inspire boys from other grades to do the same.
  Marathon effort!

Mr Carrolus, a Grade 7 teacher here at KEPS since 2007, has just completed his ninth Comrades Marathon on the 29 May 2010. In fact his fifth comrades in a row.

A teacher for over 27 years, Mr Carrolus only made his Comrades debut in 1992, a tough year to begin as it was the 'up run' from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.

That means he can now proudly add 2010 to his list of Comrades completed, being 1992, 1994, 1999, 2000, 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009.

Congratulations Mr Carrolus, you have done us proud!

If anyone is wondering what his secret is to the last four succesful Comrade's in a row, this may be a clue: he has been know to train in the annual KEPS cross-country race (see image below).

  Grade 1 mugs!

Grade 1 commemorative mugs are for sale from the Grade 1 teachers for R65 each. Please support this initiative. It is a way for your son to remember his Grade 1 year, and at the same time raise money for Grade 1 extra outings.

As seen in the newsletter in March, it has a vibrant design and the three Grade 1 teachers names printed along the bottom.

If you are interested in one (or more) of these mugs, please place the EXACT amount of money in a sealed envelop, marked "MUGS" for attention of the Grade 1 teacher.

  Bongani is BEST !!!!

Thank you to all our parents who voted for Bongani Mashinini, our Traffic Freeflow Pointsman, in the month of March. Bongani won Pointsperson of the month.

Please remember to go to Outsurance to cast your vote every month.

  Rugby festival 2010

We are proud to say that we play in the KES Easter Rugby Festival and that our Prep rugby festival is growing from strength to strength. We started playing in the festival with only eight schools competing and have now grown to sixteen schools playing competitive but still festive rugby.

We have some top schools in our festival like Wynberg Boys Junior from Cape Town and Queens College from the Eastern Cape. We also have some of the top local schools like Monument Primary and Laerskool Florida playing.

The KEPS first team won four out of their six games including beating Wynberg Boys for the first time in four years. Our festival is a very enjoyable time for the boys, coaches and parents. We hope to see you all there next year to share the spirit and to show you again what our KEPS boys are made of!!!

  Message from the headmaster

JOHN FOOTE
HEADMASTER

I would like to welcome you to our website. King Edward VII Preparatory School is one of only two public monastic schools in Johannesburg and we are very proud of our 101 years of tradition. To my mind, we are a true "Rainbow Nation" school. We offer an extensive extra mural and cultural programme, whilst striving to maintain high Academic standards. It is a tough and competitive environment and we cater for boys from Grade 0 to Grade 7, with the option of continuing right up to Grade 12 at King Edward VII High School. If one is to raise a son in South Africa, King Edward's provides the perfect setting in which to learn respect and tolerance for all religious and cultural groups. This will stand your son in good stead for the future.

I hope that this website will prove to be of benefit to the learners and parents at our school who wish to check on the dates of events and fixtures as well as to our Old Boys who wish to keep track of what is happening at King Edward's. Prospective parents should find this site useful in determining what King Edward VII Preparatory School is all about.
