  School's code of conduct

Vision / Mission

Our School was founded on and is based on tradition and a proud heritage. To maintain this ethos, the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE), the Headmaster, the Governing Body, Staff, Parents and Pupils all need to work as a team to maintain our high standards.

Our Code of Conduct has been in place for a number of years. As different needs and situations have arisen, our various codes and policies have changed and will continue to do so. This will be done in conjunction with parties concerned. Both our Schools have produced world-class leaders, upstanding members in many different societies, and most important, men who can proudly say they attended our Schools.

GOAL

The overriding goal at our School is to encourage all our pupils to be involved in as many aspects of our School programme as possible, and to be content with their achievements. All our pupils should:
a. Feel confident and proud about themselves at school, on the sports field, participating in any cultural activity, at home and in society.
b. Have a feeling of self-worth, but with humility, through self-discipline.
c. Be able to socialise with people, irrespective of age, race, religion or cultural diversity.
d. Strive to become independent adults, who are able to accept responsibility for their actions.
e. Build friendships and associations that will influence their lives positively, last a lifetime, and re-enforce the great traditions of our School.

RIGHTS OF THE LEARNERS

a. The right of access to education - Education must be available for, accessible to and inclusive of all children.
b. The right to quality education - Education needs to be child-centered, relevant and embrace a broad curriculum, and be appropriately resourced and monitored.
c. The right to respect within the learning environment - Education must be provided in a way that is consistent with human rights, equal respect for culture, religion and language and free from all forms of violence.

PARENT/GUARDIAN RESPONSIBILITIES

As a parent, King Edward VII Preparatory School would like to believe that the above and many other factors have motivated you to send your son to our School. It is therefore incumbent upon you to read this Code of Conduct carefully, as many of your actions, reactions, as well as those of your son, will be based on this Code of Conduct.

The School, the GDE, Headmaster and all members of Staff are here for the benefit of your son. Your support will go a very long way in setting and maintaining the standards which we wish to maintain. The teachers have your son's best interest at heart, and if you believe and trust this, so will your son.

Parents have an obligation to their children to teach them values such as respect for themselves and others, good manners, a positive work ethic to name but a few. Ultimately it is your responsibility to ensure your son becomes an independent responsible adult, with our School being your partner.

Please be proactive in their formative years, by listening and assisting them in a positive manner. It is your duty to supervise their requirements for school, ie: homework, all their school books and stationery, correct sporting kit etc. If your son does not do what is expected of him regarding school, he, not you, should face the consequences of his actions. This forms the foundation of his character and life so please encourage good habits.

Their bedtime and diet must be supervised by you. Teaching a pupil who has gone to bed too late is very difficult, as he is not able to concentrate. Worldwide statistics continually point out the bad effects and dangers of junk and fast foods.

Boys learn by example, so take care in the way you behave, speak and the language which you use at home. You need to take an active role in educating your son about sex. Be as frank and open as you possibly can. He needs to know what acceptable and unacceptable behaviour is regarding his own body.

As his parents/guardian, it is your responsibility to monitor the videos, cell phone contents, DVDs and TV programmes he watches, the internet he uses, the playstation games he plays, the CDs he listens to, and all his reading material. Our staff is often shocked by your leniency and your choices, as they are not suitable for primary school pupils. Remember that they are boys and not adults, so please select according to their age level. Any unsuitable material brought to school will be confiscated to protect him and his fellow pupils.

At school, we do deal with sex education and HIV/AIDS at their grade level during Life Orientation lessons, according to GDE policy.

If you have any fears or suspicions regarding your son's sexual behaviour at school, contact your son's teacher or head of department immediately. Our therapists will also be able to assist you or your son if you feel the need for professional help in this regard.

If you need to see your son's class teacher or any other member of staff, you are most welcome. Please make an appointment through our administrative staff. It is unprofessional and not fair to the teacher or fellow pupils to interrupt teaching time. Bear in mind that teachers are usually involved in extra-mural activities at the end of the academic day and a visit from you then may not be convenient.

We appeal to you to think deeply about why you have sent your son to King Edward VII Preparatory School. Answering teachers back in an insolent manner, disrupting lessons and showing no respect for the school uniform and its rules is not "the King Edward" way. If your son is reprimanded for such behaviour by any member of our Preparatory School staff, we would like you to acknowledge our actions and chastise your son accordingly rather than condoning or ignoring the bad behaviour indicated.

For security reasons, parents must enter the School via the front door and report to the administrative staff. If it is imperative that you see your son during the academic day, he will be called to the office where you may see him.

If teachers wish to see you, please make every effort to do so and please have the courtesy to reply to their request.

No personal correspondence between the School and parents will be accepted by fax or e-mail (excluding banking details and application forms). This is to prevent the possibility of misleading information being received.

It is very selfish and dangerous to park on the yellow lines or in front of our school gates. Please be more considerate. Oak Street is a DROP AND GO area only at the start and end of the school day. Should you need to walk your son into school for some reason, please park in St John's Road.

PARENTS EVENING

Please make every effort to attend. It is in the best interest of your son. Your lack of interest is hurtful and embarrassing to him.

GENERAL BEHAVIOUR

Pupils are expected to:
a. Represent the School in an appropriate manner at all times.
b. Behave responsibly, without endangering the safety, welfare or rights of others.
c. Behave courteously and be well mannered at all times. Insolent and bad behaviour cannot be tolerated.
d. Wear their blazers to the Headmaster and the administrative offices.
e. Move from classroom to classroom promptly and quietly, especially in the Quadrangle area.
f. Greet all staff, (teachers, administrative staff and general assistants) and other adults. They should call them by their correct names if known and doff their caps at the same time. If greeted by a pupil or member of staff, it would be appreciated if parents return the greeting.
g. Respect King Edward VII Preparatory School in its entirety ie: the GDE officials, the Headmaster, the Governing Body, teachers, administrative staff, sporting coaches, general assistants, parents, fellow pupils as well as visitors to our School.
h. Refrain from all ball games within the classrooms and their environs. Ball games may only be played on the sports fields.
i. Aftercare is a very well run private service on the school premises for you and your son's convenience. All school and class rules apply while at aftercare as well as all aftercare rules.
j. Respect all school buildings and school grounds. This includes not defacing any immovable or movable property.
k. Refrain from littering the school premises, sporting facilities and the area surrounding the school.

PUNCTUALITY

Pupils must be at school on time. School hours are as follows:

Pupils arriving late will have their names recorded in a book. Parents of regular offenders will be contacted as time lost is Education lost. It is the pupil's responsibility to catch up on any work missed as a result of being late.

Children leaving during school hours MUST be collected from the office. This is for security reasons.

DRESS CODE

All pupils are to arrive and leave school in their full school uniform, looking neat and tidy. Pupils must ensure that they have the correct kit for sporting activities (see School Prospectus for all school uniform requirements).

CELL PHONES

If possible, these should be left at home. However should they be brought to school, they must be handed to the class teacher for safekeeping before school starts. The use of cell phones during the academic day is strictly forbidden, either in or out of the classroom. If disregarded, the cell phone will be confiscated and kept in a safe and will be returned at the teacher's discretion. Inappropriate use of a cell phone will be dealt with by the Headmaster.

BREAK DETENTIONS

Teachers may retain pupils during break for disruptive behaviour which has prevented the teacher and other pupils from doing their work. The teacher will supervise pupils and pupils will have the opportunity to have their lunch.

Pupils who have not completed their homework will be sent to the Science Lab to finish it. The teacher on duty will supervise them and they will have the opportunity to eat their lunch.

PLAGIARISM

Copying notes from various references as one's own is dishonest. Pupils will be penalised and it will affect their assessment.

COMPULSORY SCHOOL FIXTURES

  Time: 08h30 - 11h30
Place: Old Ed's cnr 3rd Avenue and 11th St, Houghton

CLASS, SCHOOL AND GENERAL RULES

Our Code of Conduct is under the guidance of the GDE as is our academic, cultural, sporting and many other programmes which have to be followed and adhered to by both Schools.

We have been advised by the GDE that general and class rules need to be drawn up in conjunction with the pupils. Each class teacher does this and then the entire grade discusses these rules with all the relevant teachers and pupils. This usually takes place in the School Hall at the start of the year. Obviously each class and grade as well as particular subjects will have their own set of rules pertaining to their needs and requirements eg: Computers, Music, Physical Education, the Media Centre and Aftercare. These rules are displayed in the classroom.

Pupils must take note that all rules apply to each pupil all the time, while they are at school. Their behaviour must be consistent and not change from class to class or situation to situation.

THE CARD SYSTEM/MERITS AND DEMERITS

This system is applied throughout the School.

NO MERIT MAY CANCEL A DE-MERIT.

GOOD BEHAVIOUR MERIT CERTIFICATES

Pupils will be issued with a card of credits which must be carried with them at all times. Breaking school rules will cancel out credits and ten cancelled credits will result in a detention.

Merit certificates will be handed out at the end of the term to those boys who have retained all their credits.

READING CERTIFICATES

Boys who read ten or more books will have their name read out at Assembly and will receive a Reading Certificate.

GREEN CARDS

Boys who have received five Good Work Stamps in their classwork books will be presented with a Green Card in Assembly.

GOLD CARDS

Boys who have received ten Good Work Stamps in their classwork books will be presented with a Gold Card in Assembly.

Green and Gold Cards must be signed by parents and returned to the Headmaster, after which they will be filed in the pupil's portfolio which remains the property of the GDE.

BAD BEHAVIOUR DE-MERITS

Pupils who break School and or Class rules will be given a warning. Each grade will decide how many warnings constitute a demerit. In severe cases, no warnings will be given but an immediate de-merit will be issued eg: rude and insolent behaviour.

YELLOW CARD: In Foundation Phase (Grades 0 to 3), these Cards are given on receiving five demerits and result in a one hour detention held in the Media Centre. In Intersen Phase (Grades 4 to 7), these Cards are given on receiving ten demerits and result in a two hour detention. Misdemeanours counting towards a demerit are indicated on the green discipline cards. A Yellow Card, signed by the Headmaster or Deputy Principal, will be sent home via your son. This card has to be signed by the parent/guardian and returned to the Headmaster or Deputy Principal. Your son will then be required to attend a detention during the week. This detention is not negotiable and cannot be changed or cancelled except in exceptional circumstances eg: religion. Senior detentions (Grades 4 - 7) will be two hours and Junior detentions (Grades 0 - 3) will be one hour. If Juniors get three detentions, then they will be required to attend the two hour Senior detention from then onwards. Appropriate work will be done. Parents are welcome to contact the class teacher to find out what offences have been committed.

RED CARD These cards are handed to pupils who have committed severe offences. Further action may be taken by the Headmaster and will necessitate a meeting between parents and the Headmaster.

The following actions are totally forbidden and could result in a Red Card.
a. Swimming pool and Jungle Gym - pupils may not use the swimming pool or jungle gym unless supervised by a teacher or authorised person.
b. Bullying - no form of bullying will be tolerated. Unfortunately bullies are sneaky and devious which makes it very difficult for teachers to be aware of this disrespectful behaviour. If you suspect your son is the victim of bullying, ie: physical, mental or emotional, please report it to your son's class teacher or the Headmaster immediately. Bullying is ugly and cowardly and the offender will receive an immediate Red Card and midweek detention. He will also be carefully monitored so that this despicable behaviour is not repeated. If need be the parents will be called in.
c. Theft - in order to prevent theft from taking place, please leave valuables at home. Money may be handed to the class teacher for safekeeping. All boys are entitled to a locker. They must provide their own lock and key. Any pupil caught thieving, will automatically receive a Red Card followed by a midweek detention. Parents will be called in to see the Headmaster. As theft is a criminal offence, the School has the right to contact the SAPS as well as the GDE. If the Headmaster feels that strip-searching will result in bringing the culprit to book, this will be done with the approval of the GDE under the guidance of the Headmaster and senior staff causing the least amount of discomfort for all pupils.
d. Indecent or obscene language.
e. Leaving the school property without permission. This includes the café and the Sasol Garage.
f. Staying away from lessons (bunking).
g. Cheating.
h. Vandalism of school/private property. The perpetrator will be responsible for any costs incurred.
i. Smoking.
j. Pornography is totally unacceptable and will be reported to the SAPS and the GDE. If accessed through the internet, the pupil will be suspended from the Computer Laboratory.
k. Any form of substance/alcohol consumption. This will be reported to the GDE.
l. Possession of dangerous weapons is a criminal offence and the GDE and SAPS will be informed.
m. Participation in any illegal activity.

These Red Cards must be signed by parents and returned to the Headmaster after which they will be filed in the pupil's portfolio which remains the property of the GDE.

Your assistance in our merit/demerit/card system would be greatly appreciated. Be proud of your son's achievements and assist us in not having to hand out Yellow/Red Cards followed by detentions.
