Debating Gold!

Our debating teams have had an exciting and eventful journey this year, filled with persuasive arguments, witty rebuttals, and the occasional spirited clash over “the motion.” From the first tournament to the final round, both our Junior and Senior teams showed tremendous growth, teamwork, and passion for the art of debate. Week after week, they refined their speeches, sharpened their logic, and learned the fine balance between conviction and courtesy — all while navigating the unpredictable twists of each new motion that came their way.

The results speak for themselves: our Junior team (Gabriel Marcou, Kgosi Mapila, Nicholas Wolhuter, Riley Howe, and Thomas David) triumphed as the champions of the NDL Johannesburg South League, taking first place in the junior division. Meanwhile, our Senior team (Muhammed Abba, Siphesihle Ncube, James Hooper, Shabir Ssuna, and Taye Koma) proudly secured second place in the senior league. At the National Debating Tournament our juniors continued to shine, taking third place nationally.

Of course, no debating season would be complete without a few laughs about the mysterious language of debate — from the eternal battle between “Prop” and “Opp” to the frantic whispers of “What’s the motion again?” just minutes before the round began. Our teams have mastered not only how to argue persuasively but also how to think critically, listen respectfully. Through every motion, rebuttal, and point of information, our debaters have embodied confidence, collaboration, and charm — making this year’s debating journey one to remember.
