ACADEMICS

Academic Overview

At King Edward VII Preparatory School, we pride ourselves on our heritage, long-standing traditions, and diverse cultures. Our boys are encouraged to participate in our cultural, extramural,l and academic activities to develop educated all-rounded young men who will positively contribute to the community.

Literacy and numeracy are key to a child’s development. We therefore encourage our parents to be involved participants. Reading daily is crucial and ensuring homework is complete is vital for revision of concepts taught in class.

Our academic program is aligned to CAPS (Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement) governed by the Department of Basic Education. This provides clear, structured and practical guidelines for teaching the curriculum and assessing learners.

In conjunction with CAPS, KEPS has incorporated Jolly Phonics into the phonics/ reading program.

Jolly Phonics is a fun and child-centered approach to teaching reading in the Foundation Phase through synthetic phonics. It uses a multi-sensory method by using actions for each of the sounds and incorporates catchy songs and stories. Jolly Phonics has wonderful resources including a free app on Android phones which parents can download for their boys (also available on iPhones but at a cost).

NumberSense supplements our Mathematics program. It is a creative way to learn
Mathematics. It promotes critical thinking and implements a variety of strategies to get to an answer.

Thinking maps are taught as part of our academic program. Designed by TSSA (Thinking Schools South Africa) to allow boys to visualize the content taught, these maps are used to consolidate concepts for effective learning.

Computer lessons are incorporated into our Technology curriculum. The John Foote Technology Centre has been upgraded and boys from Grade R to Grade 7 have access to educational programs, Coding & Robotics, and IT-related activities.

Academic reinforcement classes are available after school to those who need support in smaller classes or revision of key concepts.

We have a wonderful team of committed teachers who have the boys’ best interests at heart, continuously encouraging, challenging, and developing respectful young men. STRENUE – With all our might!
